"My ambition: to place perfumery back on its pedestal by going back to the truth about perfume; back to the way perfume was made in the early 20th century, but adding a contemporary twist at the same time. This is what the 1st collection called « L’Oeuvre Noire » is all about. “L’Oeuvre Noire” is a collection of 10 unique fragrances composed with the highest quality raw materials, the rarest and most expansive essential oils without any limit to the perfumers imagination. I conceived the “L’Oeuvre Noire” with a quasi-Faustian ambiance in mind, like those that darkened Rimbaud’s spirit or conjured the witches in MacBeth. But it also recalls contemporary R&B lyrics like those of 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg or Pharell Williams, all about temptation in the face of urban violence, like Baudelaire before them, as expressed in his prose poetry. "My soul is transported by fragrance like those of other men are transported by music". Petits poèmes en Prose, Baudelaire There have been so many new launches over last 20 years – 500 new perfumes per year in the world – creating confusion in the public’s mind. It is thus time to develop an exceptional and creative masterpiece to mark the difference among this avalanche of new fragrances! " Kilian Hennesey on his fragrance line, Kilian. The 90's was in many ways the apotheosis of the celebration of all things "industrial" within the confines of fashion. Remember those floor length slip dresses in griege, the covers of Harper's Bazaar lit with flourescent tubing and of course the rapid adoption of Comme des Garcons' "concrete bunker" retail aesthetic into the general store design vocabulary. That moment in fashion will always be summarized in my mind by the cold electric smell of 1993's Odeur 53, the No 5 of my 90's generation (sorry CK 1. Your love was short-lived). |
