Cut It Up, Speed it Up, Shoot Ahead!

Playing dress up with Jourdan on Mike Schwartz's set was so much fun!Playing dress up with Jourdan on Mike Schwartz's set was so much fun!

Where will it end? The incessant fast-forward of the digital information society. Kids no longer live in the moment. They live in tomorrow. Or rather next season, as in Spring/Summer 2009. I myself don't know if I'm shopping for Spring or pulling Fall from the showrooms or prepping concepts and inspirations for Spring 09 with my friends in design. I was thinking about all that while hanging out with a series of sped-up, super-ahead young creatives this weekend. Take Shayne from Hood By Air for instance. We were chilling at a Michael Schwartz shoot with Women's gorgeous little belle Jourdan Dunn. I was telling Shayne about my eccentric decision to move to the Financial District. Shayne was telling me about the future direction for the next Hood By Air line which was very..Financial District. We both went "Zeitgeist!!!" Its not for me to spill HBA's tea too prematurely but I really love their mixture of off-sportswear and conceptualist experimentation that these guys are exploring. I really do feel like something really fascinating is crackling in New York right now. It is exactly as George Brown at Red said yesterday when I popped by the offices to say hallo. He was making the prophecy that there's this weird convergence coming between hard money, fine arts and deep fashion. Recession or not, his observation was that all those hedge fund guys have started to evolve really sophisticated tastes. They are said to know their brand narrative as well as any Conde Nast editor. Everyone of them it seems, wanted to have a renegade artist as a best bud. Money it seems is not quite as vulgar as it once was. " Hmmm." I thought. Then I went home and popped "American Pyscho" on the telly.

Cutting back to Jourdan, (who we've all taken to calling Jour-Dannn) this elegant girl is really begin to unfold and flower. She was so playful and confident at the shoot it was like seeing a colt finding its footing and starting its first gallop. I think refusing to throw a party over Jourdan's show bookings because she is a black model might have been seen by some people as being jaded on my part but the funny thing is, Jourdan appreciated my attempts to celebrate her as an individual, particular and beautiful without qualification. I'm really happy to have hung out with her and gotten to know her better. I shot a little 10 sec clip of her at the shoot which I'll upload over at MDX tomorrow as proof of this girl's newfound self-possession. As I watched Mike and his team primp and polish up Jouradn, I said to Shayne. "She's like the best life sized Barbie doll ever " I commented as Jourdan tottered down the studio stairs in one of James Tinnely's "Secretary-gone-mad!" outfit.

In other hiss, the Squad rang me up today asking if I knew why Ashley Brokaw was casting CK Jeans? "Uhmmm...because the House Of Calvin likes it that way, " I ventured. The Meisel gig though that has the most curious eyes scanning it has got to be the Prada. Multiple girl or Only Girl, place your bets. But we should all take FW 08 campaign news with a grain of salt. I know of one campaign that was slated to be a three-girl show that got switched up to being the starring vehicle for one iconic girl this weekend. And there was a bit of flashback hiss that made me long for the days when models were mad bad and dangerous to know. One of the squad alledges that in that legendary video for George Micheal's "Freedom" one of the original girls scheduled was Shana Zadrick until a certain take-no-prisoners diva stole all of poor Shana's outfits and had her chopped from the proceedings. Extra points for guessing which beautiful monster executed the hatchet job. Oh what the hell. The diva was said to be La Linda. How we miss the days when models would show up and choose which dresses they would be wearing in the show. Or do we?

Ashley Brokaw? Meisel?

What about Delois?

Taste is a dictatorship.
