Julier Bugge's Maximum Relevancy

I love Julier Bugge on the cover of Husk, one of the emerging magazines I'm most fascinated by. It brought back to mind this interview I had done with Julier for the latest issue of Spur. I had to transcribe it sitting on a bench in The Louvre under serious deadline. Re-reading it now , I appreciate how Julier represents maximum relevancy as a current and contemporary taste-point in beauty .

Julier Bugger stands at the head of the class when it comes to cool girl distinction. The 19 year old Danish student has been nothing but exclusive in her career thus far, starting with her opening slot at the FW 12 Balenciaga show that led to her nabbing a slot in the campaign shot by Steven Meisel. Since then her first and key editorial, for Vogue Italia, has been with this same photographer, thus keeping Julier in that very selective club for her bookings.

Julier's only excursion outside that Balenciaga/Meisel/Vogue Italia axis has been her only other Paris show booking, which was for Hedi Slimane's highly anticipated SS13 Saint Laurent show . As Slimane is Julier's favorite art photographer , that casting was an emotional highlight for her, even as she describes working for Balenciaga as the joy of "being with family"

If she strikes you as the perfect image of the cool girl college student with that requisite rock edge, then you can fully understand why Julier is the model of choice for designers , stylists and photographers dedicated to making their brand rigorously contemporary . The aura is not a pose or mere perception . She is indeed, the aesthetic of the house (given her musical tastes ). Julier took time out straight after her turn at Saint Laurent to speak with TI. This is what she disclosed!

WS:Could you tell us a little about how you grew up and your background?
JB: I grew up in a small town called Nykøbing Sjælland, the population is 5000 people, so it's the kind of town where everybody know everybody.
It is a fantastic town being a child in, but it got a bit boring in the teen years, and when I was 18 I moved to Copenhagen.

WS: .How were you scouted ?
JB: My friend told me to try to send some photos to 1st Option Model Management, and so I did, the day after my meeting with them, I got signed there.

WS:What was your first opinion of the idea of modeling?
JB: I didn't really care for it at first, I just wanted to see how far I could get in Denmark. I never thought I would go international.

WS:. How would you describe the Julier Bugge style?
JB: Hmm thats a hard one, maybe just: leatherjacket. Because that's a thing I always wear.

WS: .You debuted at the FW 12 Balenciaga show which turned out to be a big cult hit collection for fashion people. What pieces did you get to keep from the collection?
JB: I got pieces from older collectionens. I got a beautiful bag, a blazer jacket, a t-shirt, a shirt and a dress.
I love it!

WS: .Then you just did the really beautiful SS13 Balenciaga with the ruffles and the gorgeous shapes. What do you fancy keeping for yourself from the show?
JB: The show was so beautiful! I loved doing it. Amongst others, I really wanted a kind of lace shirt, a white one with long sleeves, it was amazing!

WS. It must have been exciting to be a part of Hedi Slimane's debut show for Saint Laurent. Can you tell us the pieces you personally treasure ?

JB: Hedi Slimane is actually one of my favorite photographers, so it was an honer doing his show. I wanted EVERYTHING from that collection. It was really wearable and I loved that it was kind of cowboy in a way. The leather pants were awesome, the lace shirts and the finale dresses were amazing.

WS. After two seasons in the fashion world do you see yourself being here for a long time as one of its stars or do you have other dreams?
JB: You never know :-) Let's see how far I can get. But when i'm done modelling, I want to work in the music industry.

WS. What's the music that you are listening to right now?
JB: I listen to a lot of different music. The Strokes is my favorite band of all times. But I 'm really into 60's-70's rock. Right now Procol Harum is on repeat on my iPhone.

WS. What do you look to for inspiration in your life?
JB: My friends I think.

WS: What's the best thing being a model has done for you?
JB: The people I have met. For an example, every time I'm at Balenciaga to work with them, I feel like part of the family.

WS. What is the next great challenge for you?
JB: The next challenge is finding out how to ballance model work with my school. (laughs)

Taste is a dictatorship.
