Martynka Wawrzyniak is a mixed-media artist who has worked with photography, video, performance and installations.
In today’s society we do everything we can to mask the natural scent of our bodies, thus forgoing an ancient form of animal communication. I wanted to isolate these primal human essences and deliver them in an environment devoid of other sensual distractions. The piece represents the true essence of a woman – free of visual prejudice.
- Martynka Wawrzyniak
On view through November 18th, Smell Me is the final result of a year-long process the artist underwent to capture her own aromatic essence. Challenging the concept of self-portraiture, Wawrzyniak collaborated with Hunter College’s chemistry department on rigorous evaporation techniques to adequately collect small extracts of her hair, sweat, and tears. The finished blend resulted in a compressed sample which was then replicated with the help of Givaudan nose Yann Vasnier and 12.29’s Dawn Goldworm.
