Let the children play
Lyrics from Santana:

Know what I love most about this Myspace generation of kids? The mass cultural narcissism of picking up a cameraphone or a digital camera and posting an image of yourself, right there in the bloom of your youth. Its a really brilliant moment for self-portraiture . They're not waiting for anybody mainstream to justify their style. The kids are doing IT for themselves. I love that the urban digital kids are creating this incredible document of their hairstyles and tattoos and mad little styling ideas with bandanas and sunglasses and 80's vintage looks . When the Zeroes are done I think its going to be an incredible database. For the first time we'll be able to look back on a youth culture the way that youth culture saw itself. It is sort of like Jamel Shabazz's "Back In The Day" but via an electronic medium by the subjects themselves. I love too that the NY digital kids have come up with a look that flies in the face of hip-hop convention. Yes thug style still persists with the white T's and baggy Levi's and fresh tan Tims but on the streets of deep Brooklyn radical kids are rocking skintight blue cordorouys, with these candy colored basketball kicks and these brightly coloured tight t-shirts.

I love that they're growing their hair out and covering themselves with tattoos while hopping skateboards on the corner of New York Avenue and Union Street in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. If one of them forms a band or a group I'm buying the record. Just because. I love a culture that can replenish itself, don't you?

There's a little club called The Lab on Fulton Street circa the Bed-Sty district where the kids come out on a Sunday night in full regalia. Its a very tough crowd (note the warning about drunken fights on the flyer) but that ought to keep them out of the sights of that inevitable ID photographer for a hot second. Hopefully.

My lovely T.M. A.K.A. F.P.

This is really hot news baby! I bought a pair of Cazals 8 years ago but can't find them anymore. And those were re-issues ! Do you think a little article on this genius lady Cursed With Fashion would be in order? My god. We should get some really cool scene kids from LA and deck them out for the first real TI "editorial"!!!! And you did NOT say Alain Milki! Now that's what you call pulling out a REFERENCE! You are THE business my friend!

Booking My Flight To LA NOW!

OMG! We are on the same wave LENGHT! Just for clarification, "CURSED WITH FASHION" is my homeboy/BANJI-ANJI friend from way back. He is not the "LADY IN LILAC". He is friends of the "LADY IN LILAC" through the neighborhood and family / Pinoy connections. The "LADY IN LILAC" is in SEMI-RETIREMENT, sitting on a huge treasure trove of "DEAD STOCK / NEW VINTAGE / UNWORN VINTAGE" glasses. I'm featuring an amazing pair of GIORGIO of BEVERLY HILLS sunglasses circa 1989, VERY JACKIE COLLINS, with PURPLE to CLEAR gradient lenses that "CURSED WITH FASHION" gave me for my recent b-day. But the TREASURE TROVE the "LADY IN LILAC" has is EPILEPTIC SEIZURE inducing!!
Regarding a shoot of LA "movers/shakers/street kids/Banji-Angi/Transgen'd Fashion Freaks/Cholos/Cholas", WE WOULD LOVE TO PRODUCE IT!! Funny that you mentioned the idea because it just shows how KISMET is involved when people of the same ilk get together like ourselves.
I've started a new venture, as a hobby which I know will grow, with
"Cursed with Fashion". It's a "CONSULTING" company, which would pool our resources and talents to help others in the following ways -
1) Art direction / Art Consulation / Fashion Research / Industry Research / Market Research / Client Research / Branding
2) Help find out new photographers, clients, publications, online fashion resource sites (like The Imagist), advertisers, journalists, artists, and other related facets of "the business" AND MORE IMPORTANTLY connecting various peoples in creating and realizing "VISIONS" from an abstract / mental / artistic vision into actual real / online / photographic / hard copy manifestations.
Our company name, which I came up with "Cursed with Fashion" is going to be called "UHURA-MASAI" CREATIVE . We came up with the name by brainstorming various pop references that were of influence to us in the past, and that would be of important relevance and possible influence in the future. "UHURA" comes from Lieutenant Uhura from the original Star Trek series, and subsequent movies with the original U.S.S. Enterprise crew.
"MASAI" comes from the nomadic Masai tribe, which originally had a large range in East Africa but now are more or less based in Kenya and Tanzania. We were inspired by the tribe's cultural/spiritual use of tribal make up, jewelry, body modification, music, dances and traditions related to their way of life, as well as their fierce reputation as warriors.
Combining "UHURA" with "MASAI" as our new art resource venue's name seemed perfect because it combined both a modern/retro-sci-fi REFERENCE with an ancient but still viable and powerful REFERENCE.
Plus on a side note, it gives big props and references to SCI-FI, Black POWER (i.e. actress Nichele Nichol's role as a powerful strong black woman in the acting industry which had a lack of that type of representation), Women's Rights, and also RETRO FUTURISTIC ( PIERRE CARDIN / RUDI GERNREICH / PACO RABANNE) costuming AND also we thought the MASAI reference would bring attention to the tribes history of independence, the amazing visual influence of their make up, wardrobe, jewelry, body modification, as well as bring a reference to their status as a tribe in modern day Africa, and other related issues which are important in the GLOBAL VILLAGE and FIRST WORLD/WESTERN COUNTRIES about modern Africa.
OKAY...note that Uhura Masai is not a "COMPANY" created "for profit" but a project from the "heart", with a purpose of realizing visions from the "dream/abstract/epiphany" realms to the actual "hardcopy/digital/analog/production/manifestation" in the "REAL WORLD".
So, what WE will do at "UHURA-MASAI", in the next few weeks -
1) send you snapshots of the complete / best of selection of the LILAC LADY'S treasure trove
2)send you some snapshots / digitals of people / street / kids of influence / BANJI - ANGIE / Transg'd Originals. We only want to feature NEW / STREET / NON TAINTED BY FASHION people, WHO ARE TRULY INSPIRATIONAL
and then we can move further with your imput....

xoxo

This is too eerie!

My Dearest TM a/k/a FP +CWF

I got chills on the Uhuru-Masai concept! Wow! That is a seriously genius piece of image juxtaposition. It is a collection waiting to happen. Please please please! I can't wait to see your shots and I love that you're bringing in the street kids and baji-angies (lol) and the Trans G originals live and direct from the boulevards of LA! Anything you need to make your company happen, please let me know. I have to thank you for helping to bring The Imagist alive and helping to convert it from just being a blog . With your company's help we can make it evolve into an on-line creative community of new kids creating a new global aesthetic.

Uhura - Masai

Hello Gorgeous,

Yes, the Uhura - Masai concept gave both myself and C.W.F. chills as well when it manifested itself. We will meet with "The Lady in Lilac" next week to sample her "CAVIAR", meaning the jewels she has in her Sunglasses / Shades treasure trove. We will shoot images of the best 25, to span circa early 1980's through early 1990's. We'll email you the frames so then we can all start discussing the next step in the production, which is editing the frame selection down to a specific time-line / concept. Then we will also start sending you casting suggestions. I'm thinking that the portraits should be of 10 people, of different looks / styles / Banji-ness, T.G. Realness, and overall UNIQUENESS. It's just a matter of casting, editing the frames and with each individual's essence / looks. But I do want to feature "The Lady in Lilac", in all her purple glory. She would be the "MATRIACH", the PINOY version of Pepper La Beija...
The Imagist and Uhura-Masai have a long and creative road ahead of us in helping to create a new and lasting vision....The Imagist is not a BLOG, but a venue of expression for our times, and Uhura - Masai will be a collective of creative energy and syntax in realizing visions. So thank you FOR the synergy!!

xoxo

Let The Children Play

Hey TI,

I wanted to let you know, as well as other members of THE IMAGIST, about a "secret" source that a very good friend and collaborator A.K.A. Cursed with Fashion informed me about for sourcing out VINTAGE DEAD STOCK / UNWORN CAZALS from the 1980's and early 1990's as well as other vintage sunglasses / glasses from the mid 1980's through early 1990's such as GIORGIO / CHRISTIAN DIOR / ALAIN MILKI / PIERRE CARDIN .
Cursed with Fashion met and befriended a woman, known as the "woman in LILAC" because she only wears LILAC from head to toe, who owns a SUNGLASS / OPTICAL shop from the late 80's THAT has amazing unworn "DEAD STOCK/UNWORN VINTAGE/NEW STOCK" in LOS ANGELES.
Have any IMAGIST members that would appreciate finding out unique SUNGLASSES/GLASSES from the "LILAC LADY" hit me up and I'll connect them with my friend CURSED WITH FASHION.....

Regards,

T.M. A.K.A. F.P.
