Naomi Campbell : Like No Other!

Naomi Campbell Turns The V&R Out: V 54 PH Mario SorrentiNaomi Campbell Turns The V&R Out: V 54 PH Mario Sorrenti

I was having brunch with a friend of mine who works as a photographer. The inevitable subject of July's Vogue Italia and the preview of Naomi's story freshly posted on the mag's website came up. "There Is Only One Naomi" was the story's title and we were pondering... Why such a pointed message? It was there and then that I found myself provoked into speaking a truth that has been on my mind for a while . "You know what I'm thinking ? Those damn lazy managers should stop sending out all these ... the-next-Naomi-Campbells... Especially after that VI edit there is no such thing. They take this perfectly sweet little kid and slap a weave on her-to look JUST like Naomi and to walk JUST like Naomi and then you have this little girl running around in New York or Paris in big sunglasses thinking diva-diva-diva. As a client, you know what it makes you want to do? Book the Original."
I think I shocked my brunch companion, because I'm not usually that blunt but there it was.The bee trapped in my bonnet for months was out. I think a great model manager is obliged to package each and every one of his girls in clever, striking, innovative ways that renders each girl unique and compelling and intriguing to those clients who would best respond to that particular girl. The great success of Liya Kebede was she was Liya Kebede and not a reference to anybody else.
Formulas are fantastic because it means less thinking when you wake up in the morning. You press auto-pilot and send the girls out in the established flight pattern. But the thing that the VI edit of Naomi's brought home to me is that diva stance was coming from a real place.

"She earned that hair and she earned the title: Naomi PH: Inez van Lamsweedre and Vinoodh Matadin ID August 08 via tfs"She earned that hair and she earned the title: Naomi PH: Inez van Lamsweedre and Vinoodh Matadin ID August 08 via tfs

Whatever her faults, that woman is a fighter and a challenger and fully invested in what she does. That shows in her eyes, it justifies that sheath of hair. She earned that hair and she earned the title . That killer instinct is what burns in Campbell's walk and whatever the naysaying...she's done it again. When I got this V preview lensed by Sorrenti of La Noami at MDC late this evening, I thought "There she goes again. Via YSL, VI , V..she's claimed another great career landmark". Speaking of career landmark, that brings me to the Sessilee edit in VI which we uploaded at MDC in its 30 page entirety. Sessilee's another fighter and she has never abandoned her pure sense of self to be anybody's Naomi wannabe. She was herself and in full occupation of that self. As I said over at MDC, this girl took that booking and went for every shot like it were life and death. Sessilee shimmered with a kind of 70's finesse that would have made St Laurent swivel in a double take. Individuality. That is the great hope of the moment and for Arlenis and Jourdan and Chanel and all those other beautiful kids in July's VI I look forward to seeing them shine as the unique and original beauties they truly are.

you go, wayne

i LOVE it when you are blunt. it's so spot on what you are saying..

excellent post mr imagist!

excellent post mr imagist! i'm so ready for this 'wave' of black models. they will pave the way for more acceptance towards colored people (in the industry and possibly outside). i'm excited the trendsetters have given their green approval light so it can begin.. finally black is the new black!

naomi

i guess our century needs icons or beauty symbols
and the people hate to change
so they just wanna keep it forever !!
Naomi is lucky for me, bein that girl chosen by everyone to represent this little black beauty, sometimes hypnotic but diva-like and especially powerfull
if it's a problem for other girls who want to shine on the catwalk, it is not a problem for her !!
so as long as she'll be alive, no one is gonna replace her !! same with kate moss
she's so unic !!
so for me, we'll need their disappearance to really make some new girls rock !!

Who Rocks?

Which new girls do you want to "rock"? Stella came after Naomi and she rocked. Amber came after Naomi and she rocked. Giselle came after Naomi and she rocked, too. Liya rocked. Are you referring to the girls from the past few years? Only time will tell but there have already been some success stories -- Daria rocks. Naomi doesn't need to disappear in order for the new girls to succeed. There are more brands out on the market than there were when Naomi was omnipresent in the late 80s and early 90s. Enough campaigns for plenty of girls...and women.

Every girl has their opportunity to "rock" but there are a number of factors involved that create the success of the model and to put the blame on models such as Naomi is absurd. It's up to the industry and the public to accept a new model. Certain things need to happen, the stars need to be aligned in a certain way.

There's no reason some of the new girls shouldn't "rock". Fashion and models are in the public eye more than ever, thanks to reality tv. However, America's Next Top Model and others came at a time when the real world of fashion's models weren't embraced by the general public -- too skinny, too young-looking and too many blondes. I think the stars are starting to align and things are finally changing. I believe we're going to start seeing some new superstar models soon.

And there's always going to be room for Naomi and her generation of models.

WRONG!

You totally missed the point Darling Child.. I would point it out to you, but I really thing you should re read the post...

The Point

What's the point? Obviously, I'm not getting it.

Here's the point

The point is that there's no other NAOMI and will never be. Just like there will be no other Gisele, or Kate, or Linda. But this doesn't mean that other model can't rock. But she will rock with her own name. You got it? Some say that: That will be the next Gisele, or Naomi, or whatever. THis is not going to happen.

Exactly... when kate came

Exactly... when kate came along.. before she was "Kate" she was hailed as the "new" Twiggy.... so really it doesn't matter if someone is called the new Naomi... if they are good enough, they will become their own "name" and people will for get they were ever the new naomi or whatever... everyone's got to start somewhere

Truer words have not been Spoken.

Great Post!

Naomi

There really is only ONE Naomi. Great post! :-)

Taste is a dictatorship.
