The work of photographer Kikuko Usuyama
I've worked virtually every month for two years now with photographer Kikuko Usuyama on assignment for Spur magazine shooting virtually every cool young model who comes onto the market. Yet I've never known the full spectrum of her work until she showed me these portraits she did of an 83 year old shamen.

Blind from birth, this amazing woman triumphed to become a figurehead in her village. There are two particular things I love about these images.

The first is the specificity of detail that amass to create a very textural experience. I feel like I'm there, at that venue in that time that the picture was taken. The second thing that moves me even more is the spirit of compassion and intelligence I feel from the respectful and graceful way Usuyama chooses to shoot her subject.

Not to reduce everything to the value of commodity but when I get my courage up I'm going to ask to purchase one of these prints as a gift to my brother who lived for several years in Tokyo. I also want to thank "Kiku" as everyone calls her for turning us on to the BCCKS link system. In her email to me Kiku explained, "BCCKS is the website that offers web-book-platforms. With this you can easily make a web book on your own." These layouts frame the images exquisitely, no?
