When Supermodels Ruled The Earth: Cindy Crawford As Icon
Who invented the supermodel? Was it Gianni Versace when he started to employ the top editorial stars of the day in his runway shows? Was it Steven Meisel when he started to bulk-book The Trinity (Christy, Linda, Omi) month after month for every gig in sight? Maybe it was Gerald Marie and John Casablancas when they started to package the right girls dressed in the right clothes, staying at the right hotel at premium rates to the clients. Or was it the girls who took these opportunities as presented by Gianni and Steven and Gerald and ran like thieves with it all the way into history ( with stops off at The Fashion Cafe, The George Michael "Freedom" video and an aerobic video here or there). I'm starting to feel like it's the girls themselves, whether by nurture or nature who really learned to sculpt themselves into larger than life figures that made them so famous and gave them their enduring appeal. Proof of this appeal? The Hiss Squad has been buzzing all week about an upcoming Vanity Fair cover set to feature the original gang of authentic supermodels. No new school kids, no late breaking divas. If you weren't on set for "Freedom" don't apply. That's the big clue cause it will be a big big cover moment!...Where the new school cool girls can apply is over at the Meisel CK Jeans casting. The sustained hiss is that they're looking to mingle the coolest of the cool legendary supermodel types with the newest of the new, new breed beauties. That should be gorgeous no? Question is can you guess which of the legends is set to shine centerpiece. The right girls in the right clothes staying at the right hotel turned out to be of eternal, appeal?

the cover will be Cindy, Christy, Linda, Naomi, Claudia & Stephanie. those were the SUPERS. sure, there was also Helena and Eva H, etc. .. and later with Kate, Shalom, Amber, Stella, Angela, etc ... and then Gisele, Karolina, Carmen, Natalia, Daria, Gemma ... but the SUPERS were those first 6 i mentioned. really, the cover might just be "The Trinity" --- Linda, Christy, Naomi... but i think they'll also put in Cindy, Claudia and Stephanie.

I would expect to see Helena and Claudia there with Cindy and company as they are still working regularly (Did anyone see timeless Claudia's new edit in GQ?)
I can't see the entire "Freedom video" gang there. Naomi will be there, she never left the scene. Christy has returned with a 'bang' with the Chanel and Escada campaigns. But aside from the V editorial and L'Oreal, Linda hasn't been doing much outside of family life. I haven't seen Tatjana around in ages.
As for others -- Yasmine Ghauri has completely disappeared and would be very unlikely. Shalom, Amber, Tyra, Caroline Murphy very likely, IMO. Kate and Gisele dominate the print ads, so why wouldn't they be there? I wouldn't be surprised to see Iman included here, too. It would be thrilling to see Karen Mulder and Yasmin Le Bon there.
As for the new girls? Who knows? Doutzen perhaps. Michael Roberts seems to adore Gemma so she is very likely. Both Vanity Fair and Vogue play up Vodianova a lot too.
This is all speculative fun but I'm just happy Vanity Fair is dedicating a cover to models again. I just pray that it won't be Annie Leibovitz doing the photoshoot (PLEASE--PLEASE--PLEASE).

Well, lets hope they also bring Tatjana Patitz, Kristen McMenamy, Yasmeen Ghauri, Helena as well and the other ones that are not that often invited to grace the magazines covers.
When people say THE SUPERMODELS, always Linda, Christy and Naomi come to their minds, but lets not forget - ok i know they were the big ones - but thereá also many celebrated models who should be given the title supermodel as well, im not gonna drop names, you should know who they are!

Kristen, Yasmeen, and Helena are always left out, when the whole supermodel phanamanon is being referenced of talked about .. I really hope they feature Kristen McMenamy, she was just really amazing, and she really paved the way for the Stella Tenants and Kirsten Owens, and Guineveres of the modeling world.... Im keeping my fingers crossed, I hope Micheal Roberts is behind this, He will get it right....

Apparently the whole schtick here is to feature the originals with the newest of the new beauties....Raquel, Stam and Liya have been around for years and already have had great moments in the sun. So the likes of Anja, Hilary, Doutzen, Maryna and Chanel would perhaps be more appropriate.

I disagree. Doutzen, a distant maybe. But the others...they are waaaay too thin. Wouldn't fit in. And Vanity Fair's readers wouldn't know who they were anyway, and Vanity Fair's American reader base wouldn't want to see that sort of model on a cover.

I'm so excited..I cannot wait to see to see the imagery. Hopefully it will be something well crafted & iconic. But its definitely bound to be just that with the likes of Linda, Naomi, Cindy, Stephanie, Christy & Claudia. Its been so amazing to see Linda, Steph, Christy and Claudia return to the lense, taking back some of the blue chip campaigns. I'd really like to see the issue add in Anja, Hilary, and that remarkebly gorgeous girl I saw on MDC, Georgina. No matter how semi- contortionist some of the new girls might be..the original women do it so effortlesly, bringing that imeasurable level of passion and commitment and ..damn..they just look incredible. Helena, Kristen, Yasmeen, Tatjana would make this picture more comprehensive...I hate the fact that they always leave Helena out of this big projects! She was and still is phenomenal model, very distinguishable. Let's not forget about Amber Valletta... but it is so funny bcos on the cover is Carla Bruni;-) by the way another supermodels from 90ies however not that well known in States;-)
